| River
John is a small village at the end of John Bay in Amet Sound. A
century ago it was home to a thriving ship building industry,
but now it is a small service center for a large rural area. The
main industries are fishing and agriculture, but there are a
wide range of small businesses in the locality. The local
population swells during the summer as this is a popular cottage
area.
Every year at the end of the July
the community celebrates with a festival week. There are
community breakfasts, entertainments, competitions and a parade.
Visitors come from far and wide for the quilt fair and the
fiddling competition. See the events calendar at River
John .com
Read-by-the-Sea
is a one day literary festival featuring readings from several
well known authors, a supper and an open mic event in the
evening.
For the visitor there are beaches
nearby, fishing harbours to explore and magnificent sunsets to
watch. Feel free to stop for a picnic at the Remembrance Gardens
or take some refreshment at one of the restaurants. If you need
to check your e-mail, drop by the new River John Library and
Innovation Centre where you will find plenty of computers and a
fast internet connection at the CAP site.
