Sunrise Trail
Balmoral Grist Mill
Located in a wooded gorge near Tatamagouche, Balmoral Grist Mill was built in 1873 by Alexander McKay. It was operated by himself and his descendants until 1954.

The mill was taken over by the Nova Scotia Museum in 1966. Visitors to the museum can see how the mill grinds oats, wheat and buckwheat. Wooden gearing, shafts and pulleys still drive the millstones, bucket elevator, hoist, sifters and other machinery. There is also a kiln where the oats are dried before being ground.
