Sunrise Trail
Arisaig
First church of catholic Highland settlers in Nova Scotia. The earliest settlement made in Antigonish County, by the Highland Scots, was in Arisaig. Visit the Scottish "Cairn" which commemorates the first Catholic Church in area. A second Cairn, commemorating the Battle of Culloden, can be seen in the neighboring community of Knoydart. As with most of the communities on this shore, you will find many descendants of the original Scottish "Highland" settlers in Arisaig.

Visit the Arisaig Provincial Day Park which boasts a Picnic Area & several short Walking Trails. There is an interpretive display which explains the geology of the area and the fossils which may be found here. Toilet facilities are available at this park. [map]

Near the Arisaig wharf, you will discover a geologically rich area with exposed volcanic lava flows, on the North side of Arisaig Point, dating back about 450 million years ago. Southwest of Arisaig Point, you can
walk along the beach alongside an exposed group of sedimentary rocks which are highly fossiliferous.

You will also find quiet beaches, scenic look-offs and several excellent Mountain Biking Trails nearby.
